Product information "George Grosz – The Muckraker: Exhibition Catalogue"
The catalogue for the exhibition “George Grosz – The Muckraker” (6 May to 24 August 2025) brings together 68 works by the Berlin-born artist George Grosz (1893–1959). It includes the portfolio “Interregnum” (64 sheets), “The Muckraker” (1937) and “Self-Portrait with Bird of Prey and Rat” (1940), which was one of the highlights of his 1941 retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
Grosz, a co-founder of Berlin Dada and a leading figure of the New Objectivity, held up an unsparing mirror to militarism, abuse of power and hypocrisy. The Nazis branded his art “degenerate”, and in 1933 he emigrated to the United States. He was also embraced early and enthusiastically in Japan, where his drawings were being read as manga as early as the 1920s.
The catalogue offers high-quality reproductions and texts on the artist’s life and work by guest curator Ralph Jentsch, Beate Wonde and Keiko Ishida. A book for art lovers, collectors and anyone who wants to rediscover Grosz’s view of politics, power and morality.
