What was the first piece in the collection?

A katana which was bought 1981 in Berlin at the flea and art market “Strasse des 17. Juni“. Many years later the piece turned out to be a work of great craftsmanship. This purchase was the beginning of the collector’s passion, expanding further in the late ’90s.

Are there known issues regarding the provenance of objects in the collection?

What are your education offers?

Furthering the knowledge about the collection is very important to us. The QR-code on your ticket gives you access to a webapp on which you can discover exclusive content before and during your visit. A wide range of separately bookable guided tours are in development.

Why are there so many media stations in the museum?

Our state-of-the-art exhibition displays allow for a diverse media offer that’s easy to understand. Through it visitors gain lasting insights into the multifaceted world of the samurai, from their inception to the present. Together with Ars Electronica Solutions we developed an innovative exhibition concept, aimed to captivate both families and experts in the field.

Can the museum spaces be rented for private events?

Yes. Selected cultural and special events, that align with our profile can be held during closing hours. Please send us requests in advance, we will be happy to inform you about our pricing, conditions and requirements.

How many objects are on view?

The exhibits will be continuously changed and is in constant development. On average there are round 1000 objects on view.

How big is the Peter Janssen Collection?

The Peter Janssen Collection is one of the largest private collection of samurai artefacts worldwide and contains more than 4000 objects. It is unique for the extraordinary quality of single object and its bandwidth, reaching from armours to tea utensils and Nō masks. The museum is one-of-a-kind in Europe.

Why are there swastikas on some exhibits?

The swastika (Jap. manji) serves as a symbol for the sun and good fortune in many different cultures and was introduced in Japan alonside Buddhism through mainland Asia around the 6th century.

Guided tours

Book your guided tour in addition to your ticket online or on-site.
During the guided tour you will be introduced to more than a thousand years of samurai history exemplified by selected objects from the collection. The 60-minute tour in English language take place daily at 3 pm, € 5 plus admission ticket. No question remains open!

SCHOOL CLASS
Samurai, ninja & yokai are an integral part of youth culture, known from movies, manga, anime and gaming. Gain an interactive insight into the development and history of this legendary culture from Japan. € 7 per person.

Our museum shop showcases a wide variety of products inspired by the museum’s collection, as well as a curated selection of authentic Japanese articles. You will find exclusive products in the online store.

Barrier-Free Access

Except for one installation, the Samurai Museum is completely accessible to visitors with impaired mobility. The second floor can be reached with a lift. Please consult the personnel at the register about how to get there. Our staff is working on making the museum as accessible as possible to all our visitors.

Bags

It is only possible to bring bags and backpacks if their format is no bigger than A4. A limited number of lockers are available for larger items.

Photography

For private reason it is allowed to take pictures (without flash only) or make movies in the exhibition. For commercial or professional reasons you need the permission of the Samurai Museum Berlin. Please contact us.

Safety Guidelines

Please do not visit the museum if you are displaying symptoms or if you have been in contact with a COVID-19 patient in the last 14 days.

In accordance with current hygiene regulations, the wearing of an FFP2 or medical mask is not mandatory in the exhibition rooms. However, visitors over 6 years of age are recommended to wear an FFP2 or medical mask and to keep a minimum distance of 1.5 meters.

Kitsune the fox accompanies you through the entire exhibition, asking questions and giving advice. The Samurai Museum offers numerous interactive digital features. It is possible to interact with the objects, for example with the gigapixel images, or to get to know the content in a playful way with the Yokaigame in our cinema room.
